Valves are chosen for a duty — isolation or regulation. Using an isolation valve to throttle flow damages it, and the failure is gradual enough to be missed.
Every valve is designed for one of two duties: shutting flow off completely, or regulating it. Matching the type to the duty avoids most valve failures.
Gate valves give a full-bore opening and very low pressure drop when fully open. They are designed to be either open or shut. Used partly open, the disc vibrates in the flow and erodes, and the seat wears unevenly — the valve then fails to seal when it is finally needed.
Ball valves offer quick quarter-turn operation and a tight shut-off. Also intended for on/off duty. Their speed of closure means care is needed on large water lines, where slamming a ball valve shut can produce damaging pressure surge.
Globe valves are built to throttle. The flow path changes direction through the seat, giving controllable resistance and predictable regulation, at the cost of higher pressure drop when fully open.
Butterfly valves are compact and economical in larger sizes, and can regulate within limits. They suit large-diameter lines where a gate valve would be heavy and expensive.
They prevent reverse flow automatically. Orientation matters — an arrow on the body shows the direction — and selecting the wrong type can cause slam on pump shutdown.
Leave room to operate the valve and to remove it. A valve installed hard against a wall or above a ceiling with no access panel will eventually be abandoned in place rather than maintained.
