Split, Ducted or Cassette: Choosing the Right Air Conditioner Type

Wall-mounted, concealed ducted, ceiling cassette and floor-standing units all cool a space. The choice usually comes down to ceiling void, distribution and access.

Once the cooling load is calculated, the remaining question is which indoor unit format suits the space. Each type solves a different architectural problem.

Wall-mounted split

The simplest option and the fastest to install. It needs no ceiling void, which makes it the default for existing buildings and small rooms. Air is thrown from one point, so it suits compact spaces rather than long or irregular rooms. Filter cleaning is easy because the unit is reachable.

Concealed ducted

The indoor unit sits above the ceiling and delivers air through ductwork to several diffusers. It gives the most even distribution and the quietest room, and nothing but grilles is visible. It requires adequate ceiling void, correctly sized ductwork, and — importantly — an access panel positioned so filters and the drain pan can actually be reached later.

Ceiling cassette

Mounted flush into a suspended ceiling, discharging in two, four or eight directions from a central point. Useful for open-plan offices, retail and meeting rooms where uniform coverage matters and no wall is available. Needs less void than a full ducted system but more than a wall unit.

Floor-standing

Suited to spaces with glazed walls, high ceilings or where fast cool-down is wanted. Often chosen for lobbies, prayer rooms and halls.

Points that decide the choice

  • Available ceiling void depth
  • Whether the room needs single-point or distributed supply
  • Realistic access for filter cleaning and drain maintenance
  • Noise expectation in the occupied space
  • Condensate drainage route and slope

Specify the indoor unit format after the room's geometry and access route are understood, not before.
