Fire Pumps and Hose Reels: The System Behind the Outlet

A hose reel is only as good as the pressure and flow behind it. How fire pump sets, jockey pumps and standby arrangements work together.

Fire protection outlets — hose reels, landing valves, sprinklers — depend on a pump set holding the system at the required pressure and delivering flow on demand.

Why a jockey pump exists

Small pressure losses occur naturally in any system. Without compensation, the main fire pump would start for every minor drop, which causes unnecessary wear. A small jockey pump maintains standing pressure and handles minor leakage, so the main pump starts only for genuine demand.

If the jockey pump runs frequently or continuously, that is a symptom worth investigating — usually a leak or a passing valve, not a pump fault.

Duty and standby

Fire pump sets commonly include a main electric pump and a standby, often diesel driven so the system remains available if power fails. The controller sequences starting, and in most standards a fire pump, once started automatically, must be stopped manually so the system cannot cycle off during an incident.

What determines pressure at the outlet

The pump must deliver enough pressure at the most hydraulically remote outlet, accounting for static height and friction losses through pipework and valves. The pressure at the pump is not the pressure at the top-floor hose reel, and design must confirm the latter.

Testing is the whole point

Fire systems sit idle for long periods, so verification is what makes them trustworthy. Routine testing typically covers automatic start, flow and pressure checks, valve position and, for diesel sets, battery condition and fuel level.

Practical points

  • Keep valves in the correct position and monitored where required
  • Ensure the pump room stays accessible and adequately ventilated
  • Record test results so deterioration is visible over time

Design, testing intervals and acceptance requirements must follow the applicable standard and the local civil defence authority.
