Sprinkler Heads: Temperature Rating and Response Type

Two ratings decide how a sprinkler behaves — the temperature at which it operates and how fast its element reacts. Neither is interchangeable.

A sprinkler head is a heat-activated valve. Each head operates individually when the air at that head reaches its rated temperature — the whole system does not discharge at once.

Temperature rating

The bulb or link is calibrated to release at a specific temperature, usually colour coded. The rating is selected relative to the maximum expected ambient temperature at ceiling level, not the comfort temperature of the room. A head rated too low will operate from normal heat build-up near a roof, a skylight or a kitchen appliance; one rated too high delays operation.

This matters particularly in Gulf buildings, where ceiling voids and roof spaces can run far hotter than the occupied area below.

Response type

The thermal element's thickness determines how quickly it reacts. Quick-response elements react faster and are typically applied in light hazard occupancies. Standard-response elements are common in storage and industrial applications. The choice follows the hazard classification in the design standard, not personal preference.

Orientation and coverage

Pendent, upright, sidewall and concealed heads distribute water differently and are not interchangeable. Each is listed for a specific orientation, and installing a head the wrong way up changes its spray pattern.

What ruins sprinkler performance

  • Painting a head, which insulates the thermal element
  • Obstructions such as ducts, light fittings or high storage blocking the spray pattern
  • Physical damage to the bulb during other trades' work
  • Using a replacement head of a different rating or type

Keep spare heads of the correct rating and the appropriate wrench on site, and never repaint or clean a head with solvents. Design, spacing and hazard classification must follow the applicable standard and the authority having jurisdiction.
