What the rating covers, and what it does not

IP65 describes an enclosure that is dust-tight and protected against water projected from a nozzle in any direction. It says nothing about immersion, high-pressure or steam wash-down, which sit further up the scale, and nothing at all about ultraviolet exposure, solar gain or corrosion. Treat it as one environmental criterion among several rather than as the whole answer.

Sealing performance is kept only if every entry is made with a gland or blanking plug of at least the same class, unused openings are properly closed, and the gasket line is left undisturbed. Bring entries in from the underside wherever the layout allows, and drill the internal mounting plate rather than the enclosure walls.

Material and finish are not held in the catalogue and must be requested - painted steel, stainless, polyester and polycarbonate behave very differently against coastal chlorides and Gulf ultraviolet. Ask for the usable mounting plate area and the internal depth rather than external dimensions. Is IP65 enough for a rooftop position in the Gulf?

It addresses dust and driven water, which is the usual reason it is specified, but it does not address ultraviolet degradation, solar heating or salt-laden air. A sealed box in full sun runs well above the shade temperature inside, and gaskets age faster under heat and ultraviolet. For a roof, confirm the material and finish, consider a sunshade or canopy, and plan periodic gasket inspection.

Does drilling the enclosure affect its ingress protection?

In practice the installed performance is set by how the entries are made. Use cable glands and blanking plugs rated at least to the same class, keep drilling away from the gasket seating, and close every unused opening. Entries on the underside are far more forgiving than entries on the top face. Cut the internal mounting plate for equipment fixings rather than the enclosure body itself.

Which material should I ask for?

Match it to the environment. Coastal air in the Eastern Province or on the Red Sea coast carries chlorides that attack ordinary paint systems and some stainless grades; inland sites face dust abrasion and heat; process areas may face chemical splash. Painted steel is mechanically robust but relies on its coating system, while non-metallic enclosures avoid corrosion but carry temperature and ultraviolet limits. Request material, grade and finish explicitly.

Which dimensions should I state in the enquiry?

Give the usable mounting plate area you need, the internal depth including anything door-mounted, and the space required below the entries for cable bending radius. External dimensions do not tell you what will fit. State the mounting method as well, whether wall, pole or frame, and whether door-mounted instruments or a viewing window are needed, since none of that is held for this item.
