Choosing and specifying this item

Where a four-pole unit belongs

Four poles interrupt the three lines and the neutral together, which is what a three-phase board with a distributed neutral, a TT earthing arrangement, or a generator changeover position requires. The sensing core sums all four conductors, so ordinary load unbalance does not operate it — but any neutral-to-earth contact downstream will. The classic site cause is a neutral bar bonded to the earth bar inside a sub-board; find that before energising rather than blaming the device.

Sizing and discrimination

63A describes continuous through-current, not fault-interrupting capability. Confirm it clears the calculated maximum demand with margin at the temperature reached inside the enclosure, and check the terminal conductor range — an incomer at this rating usually arrives on cable needing the correct lug or pin termination. If 30mA devices also sit on outgoing ways, a device of the same sensitivity above them gives no discrimination; ask whether a time-delayed selective version at a coarser sensitivity is required for the upstream position.

Confirm with the technical offer

Rated voltage against a 380–415V three-phase supply, declared frequency (60Hz in Saudi Arabia, 50Hz elsewhere in the GCC), tripping type, and the conditional short-circuit rating with the intended upstream protective device.

Frequently asked questions

Can this be used as the main incomer for a complete three-phase distribution board?

Electrically yes, but work out the leakage budget first. The standing leakage of every outgoing circuit passes through one incoming device, and at 30mA sensitivity a board full of electronic loads can sit close to the operating point before any fault exists. Measure total leakage with a clamp meter, and consider protecting defined groups rather than the entire board from a single position.

Will an unbalanced three-phase load cause nuisance tripping?

No. The sensing core sums the currents in all three lines and the neutral, so a normal unbalance returning through the neutral is measured as well and the vector sum stays near zero. Tripping means current is leaving the circuit by another path: damaged insulation, moisture inside an enclosure or, very often, a neutral conductor touching earth in a downstream board.

Why is no voltage rating shown in the catalogue?

Voltage and frequency are not held in this entry, and stating either without the manufacturer's declaration would be guesswork. Confirm both when you request the offer, quoting the site's nominal supply. Three-phase distribution across the GCC generally sits between 380 and 415V, at 60Hz in Saudi Arabia and 50Hz in the neighbouring states, so the declared values must be checked against the actual network.

How does this differ from the two-pole 40A device in the same range?

Two things change together. Pole count follows the supply — four poles for three phases plus neutral, two for a single-phase line and neutral — and the higher through-current suits an incoming or sub-main position rather than a final circuit group. The four-pole unit also takes more rail width and larger terminations, and both affect how the board is laid out.
