Choosing and specifying this item

S2 is a shock-resisting tool steel, chosen so a tip can be run hard without chipping under the impact of a sudden slip. That governs how long a cross tip keeps its shoulders, which is what a PH1 driver lives or dies by.

Tip size decides the outcome

PH1 belongs on the smaller machine screws: control gear terminals, instrument brackets, small equipment covers, accessory plates. Putting PH1 into a PH2 recess is the single commonest cause of chewed screw heads on a site — the smaller tip only bears on the upper part of the recess, so it cams out as soon as torque rises. Carry a sample screw when you standardise a store holding.

Length as a working decision

At 100 mm the blade reaches into a typical panel or box while still letting the technician get behind the handle and push square. That axial push, not grip strength, is what keeps a cross tip seated.

Confirm at enquiry

Whether the tip is magnetised, the handle profile — a tri-lobe grip yields noticeably more torque than a plain round one at the same effort — and the tip finish. This is a standard driver, not an insulated one; do not deploy it on circuits that are not proved dead.

Frequently asked questions

How do I tell whether we need PH1 or PH2?

Take a screw from the equipment you actually maintain and try both. A correctly sized cross tip sits deep in the recess with its shoulders in contact and will not rock. PH1 covers smaller machine screws on control gear and instruments; PH2 covers the larger recesses on enclosure covers and panels. Most maintenance stores need both sizes rather than a compromise between them.

Does S2 steel make a practical difference?

It is a shock-resisting tool steel, so the tip can be hardened for wear while still tolerating the sudden loads of a slip or an off-axis push without chipping. In practice that shows up as tip shoulders that stay sharp for longer. It says nothing about insulation or about torque capacity, both of which are separate questions to settle for the job in hand.

Should we take the 100 mm or the 75 mm version?

Measure the clearance in front of the screws you work on most. The 75 mm blade is the access tool for shallow boxes and crowded enclosures where a longer driver cannot be brought in square. The 100 mm blade is the better general issue: it reaches recessed fixings and gives room for a second hand on the shaft to steady the tip.

Is a magnetised tip worth asking for?

In panel and enclosure work it usually is, because it lets you start a screw one-handed and stops a dropped fastener disappearing into the gear below. Where the work is around sensitive media or magnetically sensitive components, teams often prefer a non-magnetised tip. Tell us which you need at enquiry stage so the store holds a consistent set.
