Choosing and specifying this item

Moulded case, or a large miniature device?

At 100 A the two device families overlap, so decide first what actually forces the moulded-case choice: a prospective fault level a miniature breaker cannot clear, the need for a lockable isolating point ahead of a sub-board, or a thermal setting that has to be tuned down to protect a cable smaller than the frame. That decision shapes the whole enquiry.

Breaking capacity is the first gap to close — take the prospective short-circuit current from the upstream transformer rating and impedance, not from the feeder size. Rated voltage should be checked against 380-415 V three-phase distribution, with Saudi networks running at 60 Hz. Trip unit: ask whether the thermal element is fixed or adjustable and what band it covers, because a frame at this rating normally feeds a distribution board and has to grade against the miniature breakers below it. Mounting: fixed, plug-in or withdrawable, and whether the panel needs front, rear or extended terminals plus phase barriers.

Practical points

Three poles give no earth-fault protection by themselves; an earth-leakage relay with a core-balance CT is a separate line item. Allow for the temperature inside the enclosure, which in a Riyadh plant room sits well above any calibration ambient.

Frequently asked questions

Why use an MCCB at 100 A when miniature breakers are made at this rating too?

Three reasons usually decide it. The fault level at the board may exceed what a miniature device can interrupt. The project may need a lockable isolating point with defined maintenance access ahead of a sub-board. Or the protection setting may need adjusting to suit a cable smaller than the device frame, which a fixed miniature breaker cannot do. Establish which of these applies, because it determines the breaking capacity and trip unit you should ask us to quote.

What do you need from me to quote this correctly?

The prospective short-circuit current at the point of installation, the system voltage and frequency, whether you want a fixed or adjustable thermal-magnetic trip, and the mounting and terminal arrangement your panel builder needs. Also tell us any auxiliary contacts, shunt trip or undervoltage release required, and whether the project specification calls for a particular approval regime, since that has to be confirmed against the offer before order.

Does a three-pole unit like this protect against earth leakage?

No. Three poles cover overload and short circuit on the phase conductors only. Earth-fault or earth-leakage protection is a separate function, provided either by a trip unit that includes an earth-fault stage or by an external earth-leakage relay with a core-balance current transformer around the outgoing cores. Decide which route the project takes early, because the relay, CT and panel space have to be allowed for in the board design.

How do I make sure it grades with the MCBs it feeds?

Grading depends on the current settings and the time characteristic, not on the rating alone. Ask for the trip unit's adjustment range and its time-current curve, then compare it with the curves of the outgoing miniature breakers and the device upstream. Where the fault level is high, check whether the manufacturer publishes a tested discrimination or back-up protection table for that specific pairing rather than relying on curve overlap alone.
