Choosing and specifying this item

Where this frame usually lands

A 160 A three-pole device typically sits on a submain, a riser feeder, or the supply to a motor control panel serving pumps, air handling units or a packaged unit. Load character matters more than the headline current: on a motor feeder the magnetic, instantaneous element decides whether the breaker rides through starting current, while the thermal element protects the cable.

Gaps to close before quoting

Trip unit — establish thermal-magnetic or electronic, and whether the magnetic pickup is fixed or adjustable. For motor feeders, ask for that setting range expressed in multiples of rated current. Breaking capacity — a feeder this size is often one step from the incomer, so the fault level exceeds that at a final distribution board; take the figure from the network study. Voltage — confirm suitability for 380-415 V, and note Saudi Arabia runs at 60 Hz while other GCC networks are 50 Hz. Mounting — fixed or withdrawable, and the terminal arrangement.

Specify the accessories now

Auxiliary and alarm contacts, shunt trip and undervoltage release are ordered with the breaker, not fitted comfortably later. List them if the panel interfaces with fire alarm shutdown or BMS status monitoring. On a TPN board, decide how the neutral is carried, since three poles switch phases only.

Frequently asked questions

Will a 160 A breaker hold in when a motor starts, or will it nuisance trip?

That depends on the magnetic trip setting relative to the starting current, not on the rated current. Direct-on-line starting draws a large multiple of full load current for a few seconds, so the instantaneous element has to sit above that inrush while still protecting the cable. Tell us the motor rating and starting method, and ask for the trip unit's magnetic setting range so it can be checked against the starting curve before ordering.

How does this differ in practice from the 100 A device in the same family?

Beyond the rating itself, the physical frame is generally larger, terminal and cable bending space in the panel grows, and the fault level where it is installed is usually higher because it sits closer to the source. The trip unit options also tend to broaden at this size. If the panel layout was drawn around a smaller frame, confirm the overall dimensions and terminal centres before the enclosure is fabricated.

Which accessories should be included with the order?

Decide on auxiliary contacts for status indication, an alarm contact to distinguish a trip from a manual open, a shunt trip if a fire alarm or emergency stop has to open the breaker remotely, and an undervoltage release where the load must not restart automatically after a supply dip. Also consider a door-interlocked rotary handle, terminal shrouds and phase barriers, all of which are easier to order now than to retrofit.

How is the neutral handled on a three-pole breaker in a TPN board?

The three poles switch the phase conductors only, so the neutral runs through a neutral bar or link rather than being switched with them. Where the specification calls for full isolation of all live conductors, or where earth-fault protection needs the neutral current, a four-pole device or a switched neutral arrangement is the usual answer. Settle this at the board design stage, because it changes both the device selection and the busbar layout.
