Choosing and specifying this item

Pump and motor tails are where this section normally lands. Compared with the smaller three-core, the reason for choosing it is rarely a bigger steady load — it is starting behaviour and distance: a circulation or transfer pump at the end of a long run, a rooftop fan, a small three-phase machine whose inrush would drag the voltage down on a thinner conductor.

Size it for the start, not only the run

A motor circuit comfortable at full load can still fail at start, when inrush pulls terminal voltage down and the machine struggles to accelerate. The designer works from the motor's starting current and starting time, the route length from the board, and the protective device chosen to ride through the inrush. Give the motor nameplate data with the route length when you enquire.

Details that decide the order

  • Core identification — this construction serves single-phase-plus-earth and three-phase duties alike, so confirm which is offered.
  • Gland type and ingress protection at the motor terminal box, and whether a local isolator sits adjacent to the plant.
  • Armouring, if the design calls for mechanical protection on an exposed route.
  • Insulation compound and voltage class from the specification.
  • Length per run, measured from the isolator to the terminal box with a loop for vibration.

Frequently asked questions

Why size a motor circuit on starting current rather than running current?

Because the worst moment for the circuit is the first second. Inrush is a multiple of full-load current, and on a long run it drags the terminal voltage down just when the motor needs torque to accelerate its load. Repeated hard starts then heat both the machine and the conductor. The designer checks starting voltage drop and starting time as well as the steady-state rating.

What should I confirm about the connection at the motor?

The terminal box entry thread and size, the gland type the specification allows, the ingress protection the location demands, and whether an adjacent isolator is required so the machine can be worked on safely. Also allow a service loop at the box; a cable pulled tight to a vibrating machine works its terminations loose. These details set the length you should order per run.

Does this cable need armouring?

Only if the design calls for mechanical protection, which depends on the route rather than on the load: a cable crossing a plant room floor, running at low level in a car park or exposed on a service yard is treated differently from one on a ladder in a riser. Armouring is a different construction, so state the requirement when you enquire rather than after.

What information makes a quotation match my design?

The core arrangement you need, the insulation compound and voltage class named in the specification, whether armouring is required, the gland arrangement at each end, and the run length from isolator to terminal box including the service loop. With the motor nameplate data as well, we can quote against the circuit your consultant actually specified rather than against a generic assumption.
