Choosing and specifying this item

This is sub-main territory. A four-core cable at 10 mm² is generally the feeder between boards — a main distribution board to a floor or landlord board, a supply to a plant panel, a tap-off to a package unit — and a feeder is judged by different criteria from a final circuit.

The feeder's own checks

  • Voltage-drop budget. The drop across the sub-main and across every final circuit downstream must fit inside one allowance. A feeder sized only on current can leave nothing for the circuits it serves. Measure the route as it will be installed, including risers and drops.
  • Fault withstand. The designer confirms that the conductor survives what the upstream protective device lets through before it clears. That check belongs to the design, not the cable selection, so ask for it.
  • The fourth core. Confirm whether it is a neutral or a protective conductor; if it is the neutral, the earth path must be provided and sized separately.

Installation points

Grouping on a ladder or tray with other feeders derates the whole group, and a riser without ventilation raises the ambient the sizing assumed. At the board, terminations are made with lugs matched to conductor and terminal, crimped with the specified die, with enough tail to dress the cores along the gland plate.

Frequently asked questions

How is a sub-main sized differently from a final circuit?

A final circuit answers to its own load and its own protective device. A feeder additionally has to leave voltage-drop headroom for everything downstream, withstand the fault energy the upstream device lets through, and carry the diversified load of a whole board rather than one point. Ask your consultant for the feeder calculation, including the drop allocated to the sub-main and to the circuits it supplies.

Should the sub-main be sized on the board's connected load or its diversified load?

On the diversified load the designer calculates for that board, not on the arithmetic sum of everything connected to it, and the diversity has to be the designer's figure rather than a rule of thumb applied on site. Ask also what spare capacity the project brief requires, because a feeder replaced later means opening the riser again. Send the downstream board schedule with your enquiry so quantities match the calculated feeder.

How does routing on a cable tray or ladder affect the cable?

Feeders grouped together on a tray or ladder heat each other, so the group is derated as a whole; spacing, the number of cables and whether the tray is covered all change the result. An unventilated riser or an exposed rooftop run adds an ambient correction on top. Send the containment arrangement with your enquiry so the design assumptions can be checked against the real route.

What is needed for a good termination at the board?

Lugs matched to the conductor and to the terminal, crimped with the die the connector manufacturer specifies, tails long enough to dress the cores along the gland plate without straining them, and torque applied to the stated value. Many specifications also require a re-torque check after the board has been energised and settled, so allow for it in the commissioning plan.
