Choosing and specifying this item

Moving up a section within the same flat sheathed construction changes the circuits it serves and the places it becomes awkward. This size belongs to dedicated points rather than general outlets — an air-conditioning spur, a cooker or hob point, a heater circuit, a longer radial where drop rather than current set the size.

The protective conductor question

In sheathed twin-and-earth constructions the protective conductor is frequently smaller than the live cores. Our catalogue does not hold the conductor arrangement for this item, so it has to be confirmed — and once confirmed, the designer has to check that the earth-fault loop still achieves disconnection with that conductor, not with an assumed equal one. This is the detail that most often gets discovered at testing rather than at design.

Handling at accessory boxes

The cable is stiffer and wider than the smaller section, and the trouble appears in the final few centimetres. A shallow accessory box, a hob outlet plate or a crowded isolator can leave no room to turn the sheath without straining the cores. Check box depth and cable entry before first fix.

Ask for

Insulation compound and voltage class per specification, the confirmed conductor arrangement, the installation method the consultant will accept, and the longest joint-free run per circuit.

Frequently asked questions

Is the earth conductor in this cable the same size as the live cores?

In this family of sheathed cables it is often smaller, and our catalogue does not state the arrangement for this item, so it must be confirmed for what is offered. Once you have the figure, the designer checks the earth-fault loop impedance against the disconnection time required for the circuit. Never assume symmetry with the live conductors on a dedicated appliance circuit.

Does one cable of this size serve both the appliance and its local isolator?

A dedicated point is normally wired as a run from the board to a switched isolator and a second short run from the isolator to the appliance connection, so plan for two lengths rather than one. The second leg is often the awkward one: short, stiff and turned into a shallow outlet plate. Confirm the isolator type the design requires and the terminal capacity of both the isolator and the appliance connection unit.

Why do accessory boxes cause problems at this section?

Because the cable is wider and stiffer, and the space behind a plate is fixed. Turning the sheath into a shallow box strains the cores at the point where they are already stripped, and an overfilled box makes torque control at the terminals difficult. Specify deeper boxes where the design allows, plan the entry direction, and check the accessory's stated conductor capacity before ordering.

Should I use this or single cores in conduit for the same circuit?

It is decided by the project specification and by the route, not by preference. Conduit-and-wire allows later rewiring and gives mechanical protection; sheathed cable is faster on clipped and embedded routes but is fixed once plastered in. Where both appear on one project, get the consultant to state which method applies to which circuit before quantities are ordered.
