Choosing and specifying this item

One question comes before all others with a four-core cable: is the fourth core a neutral or a protective conductor? Both are sold, they look identical on a delivery note, and the catalogue does not record which applies here. A three-phase distribution circuit that needs a neutral cannot use a set intended as three phases plus earth, and a circuit wired the other way is left without the earth path the design assumed.

Three-phase realities in the Gulf

Distribution here is nominally 380-415 V three phase, and Saudi Arabia runs at 60 Hz — worth stating on the enquiry when imported equipment is involved. If the fourth core is the neutral, a separate protective conductor still has to be provided and sized, and it must be shown on the schedule rather than assumed.

What loads the neutral

Where the circuit feeds LED drivers, switched-mode supplies, UPS loads or drives, harmonic currents do not cancel in the neutral the way linear loads do. Ask the designer whether the neutral has been assessed for that duty on this circuit before settling the cable.

Insulation compound and voltage class from the specification; whether armouring is required for the route; gland arrangement at both ends; and the pulled length including risers, drops and tails for dressing into the board.

Frequently asked questions

Is the fourth core a neutral or an earth?

We do not hold the core identification for this item, so it has to be established with the supply offered rather than inferred from the core count. The consequence is not cosmetic: where the fourth core is a neutral, a separately provided and separately sized protective conductor is still required, and where it is an earth, the circuit cannot serve any load drawing neutral current. Take the arrangement from the design and state it on the enquiry.

Do I need a separate earth conductor with this cable?

If the fourth core is the neutral, then yes, and its size comes from the designer rather than by matching the phase conductors. Some routes use the containment or a separate insulated conductor run with the cable. Get the earthing arrangement from the drawings, confirm the required section, and include it in the same enquiry so the quantities you receive form a complete circuit.

Why do LED drivers and drives affect neutral sizing?

Non-linear loads draw current in pulses rather than smoothly, and the resulting harmonic currents from the three phases add in the neutral instead of cancelling. On a lighting or IT-heavy circuit the neutral can therefore carry more than a simple balanced calculation suggests. The designer decides whether the neutral needs uprating for the load mix on this particular circuit.

Does the Saudi supply frequency change anything for the cable?

Not for the conductor itself, but it matters for the equipment the circuit feeds. GCC distribution is nominally 380-415 V three phase and Saudi Arabia runs at 60 Hz, so imported motors, drives and control gear should be confirmed as suitable before the circuit around them is finalised. Mention the supply arrangement in your enquiry so the whole package is quoted consistently.
