Choosing and specifying this item

A flat sheathed cable answers a different installation method from single cores in conduit, and that is the first thing to settle. Twin and earth is designed to be clipped, capped or embedded as a finished cable rather than drawn into containment. Projects specified as conduit-and-wire throughout will reject it at inspection no matter how sound the electrical design is, so confirm the installation method with the consultant before ordering anything.

Confirm the conductor arrangement

The catalogue does not state how many conductors this construction carries or how the protective conductor is provided. Ask, because it changes the work: where the protective conductor is bare it must be sleeved at every termination, and the size of that conductor relative to the live cores feeds directly into the earth-fault loop calculation.

On a GCC site

  • Fixing centres and mechanical protection where the cable crosses studwork or leaves a chase.
  • No credit for cooling where the cable is buried in thermal insulation or a sealed chase — the design must allow for it.
  • The outer sheath is not a substitute for UV protection or for burial; ask what the specification requires for any run leaving conditioned space.
  • Give the longest continuous run, since a joint in a sheathed cable needs an accessible enclosure.

Frequently asked questions

Can this cable be pulled into conduit like single-core wire?

It is not what a flat sheathed cable is made for. The sheath adds bulk and friction, the flat profile does not turn well in a bend, and most specifications that call for conduit also call for single cores inside it. If your project mixes methods, get the consultant to state in writing which circuits may use sheathed cable and which must be wired in conduit, before you commit to quantities.

How is the protective conductor provided in this construction?

That is one of the details our catalogue does not carry, so it must be confirmed for what is offered. It changes the work at every point: a bare protective conductor has to be sleeved to the agreed earth colour at each termination, and it needs a continuity path through every accessory and box on the circuit rather than being cut back at the first one. Allow the sleeving in the material take-off, not as an afterthought.

Can it be buried in a wall or run in a ceiling void?

Both are normal installation methods, but each carries conditions. A cable in a chase needs mechanical protection or a permitted route zone, and one surrounded by thermal insulation loses cooling and must be sized for it. A void that runs hot in summer applies an ambient correction of its own. Tell the designer the actual method for each run so the sizing reflects where the cable really sits.

What mechanical protection does this cable need on a clipped or chased run?

It depends on where the run goes. A cable in a chase is normally protected by a permitted route zone, a capping or a steel plate; one crossing studwork or a ceiling joist needs a grommet or bushing at the hole; a surface run needs fixing centres close enough that the cable does not sag between clips. The specification and the consultant set these requirements, so confirm them before first fix.
