Choosing and specifying this item

Most small-power final circuits in GCC buildings are wired as radials rather than rings, so each 2.5 mm² circuit stands on its own protective device and its own route. That also means the size is not a free upgrade from the lighting section: the breaker, the outlet terminals and the earth-fault loop path all have to have been designed around it.

What actually decides it

Diversity assumed across the outlets, the length of the radial to the last socket, ambient in the ceiling void or riser it crosses, and how many circuits leave the board bunched in one trunking. Pantries, site offices and staff kitchens — where heaters, water boilers and coffee machines land on the same radial — are where an under-considered circuit shows itself.

Confirm before ordering

  • Insulation and voltage class, taken from the specification; grades are not interchangeable once one is named.
  • Conductor form. Solid pushes cleanly through long straight conduit and holds shape in a screw terminal; stranded turns tight bends and sits better in a crowded accessory box. State which the installer wants.
  • Colours to the project's phase convention, including the protective conductor.
  • Run lengths, given as the longest continuous pull so that packing suits the site instead of forcing a joint.

Frequently asked questions

Can one 2.5 mm² socket circuit also feed a small water heater?

Dedicated appliances are normally given their own circuit and their own protective device rather than sharing a socket radial, because a continuous heating load sits on top of the diversity assumed for the outlets. If the designer does combine them, the circuit must be rechecked for load, for voltage drop over the full radial length and for disconnection time. Ask for that confirmation in writing before buying cable to suit.

Should I ask for solid or stranded conductor in this size?

Both are made, and the choice is an installation one rather than an electrical one. Solid draws more cleanly through long straight conduit and keeps its shape under a screw clamp. Stranded negotiates tight bends and crowded wall boxes with less strain on the terminal, which many electricians prefer for accessory work. Tell us which the installer wants, since it is not a decision we should make for you.

How many conductors of this size can go into one conduit?

Two separate limits apply. The first is the conduit fill allowance for that size and the number of bends between draw boxes; the second is the grouping derating that every additional current-carrying conductor imposes on the circuits sharing the route. Overfilling appears first as scored insulation during the pull and later as warm conduit. The design should state both the conduit size and the permitted conductor count.

Does colour matter if everything is hidden inside conduit?

It matters at every termination and at every future fault-finding visit. GCC installations still contain both the older and the harmonised phase and neutral colours, and a board mixing the two is a hazard for the next engineer. Fix one convention with the consultant, order phase, neutral and protective conductor colours to it, and keep a record of the marking for the handover file.
