Choosing and specifying this item

Three cores can mean two entirely different circuits, and that is the first thing to establish. A three-core cable may be a single-phase supply with a protective conductor, or three phases with no neutral — for example to a small three-phase motor or a control panel. The catalogue holds the core count but not the identification, so ask which arrangement is offered before matching it to a drawing.

Where this size earns its place

Equipment tails and small plant connections: a fan coil unit, a small circulation pump, a control panel drop, an actuator or damper motor. The attraction is a single sheathed run to the item instead of separate conductors in containment up to the machine.

Confirm before quoting

  • Core identification and colours, since the same cable serves L-N-E and three-phase duties.
  • Sheath suitability for the route. A rooftop or external run needs a sheath the specification accepts for sunlight and heat; an internal void does not.
  • Whether armouring is required. If the design calls for mechanical protection, that is a different construction, so state it at enquiry.
  • Gland size and type at the equipment terminal box, with the entry thread and the ingress protection the location demands.
  • Length per run, isolator to machine, including the loop at the terminal box.

Frequently asked questions

Are the three cores a phase, neutral and earth, or three phases?

Both arrangements exist in three-core cable and our catalogue does not record the core identification for this item, so it must be confirmed for the batch offered. It is not a detail to settle on site: connecting a three-phase set as though it included a neutral, or the reverse, is a serious error. State the arrangement your drawing needs when you enquire and we will quote against it.

How is this different from running three single cores in conduit?

Electrically the design intent can be the same, but the installation is not. A sheathed multi-core makes a single protected run to the equipment, needs a gland at the terminal box and is fixed once installed; single cores in conduit can be drawn out and replaced later and rely on the conduit for protection. Project specifications usually name one method, so check before ordering.

What do I need to know about glands at the equipment end?

The gland must suit the cable's outer diameter and construction, thread into the equipment's entry, and maintain the ingress protection the location requires — which matters on a roof, in a wet plant room or in a washdown area. Confirm the entry thread size, the number of entries and whether the specification requires a particular gland type before the cable is cut to length.

Can this cable run outdoors or across a roof?

Only where the sheath and the route protection are suitable for direct sunlight and surface heat, which is a specification question rather than a general one. Many designs require a sheathed cable to run in trunking, tray or conduit once it leaves conditioned space. Tell us where the run goes and what the specification says about external routes, and confirm the requirement with the consultant.
