Choosing and specifying this item

Two-pole 20A ways are most often found on single-phase motor-driven plant — split-system condensing units, small pumps, booster sets, compressors. Loads that start hard and cycle often.

Starting current chooses the curve

A motor draws several times its running current for a brief period, and a hermetic compressor restarting against residual head pressure draws more again. Take the locked-rotor or starting current from the equipment nameplate and send that figure with the enquiry so the trip curve can be matched to it. Rating up to stop start-up tripping is the wrong fix: it leaves the cable under-protected against the sustained overload it actually needs protection from.

This device is not motor protection

An MCB protects circuit conductors against overload and short circuit. It does not replace a motor thermal overload, an internal thermal cut-out, or the protection built into packaged plant. Establish what the equipment already carries before assuming the breaker covers the motor.

Confirm on the enquiry

Rated voltage for the intended line-and-neutral or line-to-line duty, breaking capacity for the fault level at that board, frequency suitability, and two free adjacent ways. If plant trips repeatedly on hot afternoons, treat it as an ambient and load question before treating it as a breaker fault.

Frequently asked questions

Will a two-pole 20A hold a split-system compressor on start-up?

That depends on the compressor's starting current and the trip curve, not on its running current. A direct-on-line hermetic compressor can draw several times full-load current for a fraction of a second, and more if it restarts before pressures equalise. Send the locked-rotor amps from the nameplate with your enquiry so the curve can be matched, and check whether the unit has a soft starter or start capacitor.

Does this breaker protect the motor itself?

No. It protects the cable feeding it. Motor windings need overload protection sized to the motor and matched to its thermal behaviour, which comes from a starter overload relay, an electronic motor protection relay, or a thermal cut-out embedded in the windings. Packaged equipment usually includes its own. Check what is already fitted before assuming the distribution board covers it.

Our pump breaker only trips in the afternoon in summer. Is the breaker faulty?

Usually not. Two effects combine: the thermal element sits in a hotter enclosure so it reaches its trip point at lower current, and the plant itself works harder at high ambient, drawing more current. Measure the running current at that time of day and the internal board temperature, then apply the manufacturer's temperature-correction table before replacing anything.
