Choosing and specifying this item

A 32A three-pole way sits where sub-distribution and larger fixed plant meet: air-handling units, workshop machinery, a feed to a secondary board.

Ask which breaking-capacity figure you are being given

Two figures exist and they are not interchangeable. The ultimate value describes the fault a device can interrupt; the service value describes the fault after which it remains fit for continued use. A device may survive its ultimate rating and still need replacing afterwards. For a feeder that has to return to service quickly, ask for both figures and state which one the specification requires. This matters more here than on a final circuit, because prospective fault current rises as you move back toward the source.

Board-level checks

Confirm the rated operational voltage for line-to-line application, frequency suitability, and a trip curve matched to the starting characteristic of whatever is being fed — an AHU with direct-on-line fans behaves nothing like a resistive load. Then look at the assembly rather than the device: a comb busbar carries its own current limit and the enclosure has a declared temperature rise, so several three-pole ways at this rating in one board can be constrained by the board itself. Request the manufacturer's mounting and derating data with the offer.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between the two breaking-capacity figures, and which should we specify?

The ultimate value is the highest fault current the device can interrupt without being destroyed; the service value is the fault current after which it can be put back into service and still perform normally. They are often different numbers on the same device. For final circuits the ultimate value may be acceptable; for a feeder whose loss disrupts a facility, specify the service value against the prospective fault current.

Is a 32A three-pole suitable to feed a sub-distribution board?

It can be, provided three things line up. The prospective fault current at its location must be within its breaking capacity; the terminals must take the feeder conductor and lug; and coordination with the ways in the sub-board must be established from the manufacturer's selectivity tables. Confirm too whether the specification requires a separate isolator or main switch at the sub-board.

How many three-pole 32A ways can one distribution board take?

Fewer than the physical way count usually suggests. The comb or vertical busbar has a current rating, the enclosure has a declared temperature rise at a given loading, and adjacent devices heat one another. A board can be fully populated physically and still be limited thermally. Ask the board manufacturer for the assembly's rated diversity factor and internal temperature-rise data before finalising the schedule.
