Choosing and specifying this item

Decide the device class before the rating

At 63A four-pole, the device is usually acting as a sub-main incomer or the isolating point for a secondary board, and the honest first question is whether a moulded-case breaker suits the position better. An MCCB brings adjustable trip settings, generally higher fault withstand and published coordination behaviour; a DIN-rail device brings compactness and a simple board layout. Settle that before comparing offers.

Connection and board interface

This is the largest rating in the group, so the incoming conductor is correspondingly large. Confirm terminal capacity, lug requirement and tightening torque, and do not assume a comb busbar can feed it or be fed from it — comb assemblies carry their own current limit that is often reached well below this rating. Count four adjacent module widths plus any clearance the board maker specifies.

Coordination and confirmation

Selectivity is hardest at the top of a range, where the magnetic thresholds of upstream and downstream devices begin to overlap. Ask for the manufacturer's selectivity and cascading tables for the exact pairing you intend. Then confirm breaking capacity at the installation point, rated voltage for four-wire application, trip curve and frequency suitability, and whether the neutral pole is switched or protected.

Frequently asked questions

Should this position take a 63A MCB or an MCCB?

It depends on what the position has to do. If you need adjustable overload and short-circuit settings to coordinate with devices above and below, higher fault withstand, or a clear published selectivity performance, a moulded-case device is usually the better answer. If the duty is a straightforward sub-main on a DIN board within the fault level, the compact device suits. Decide from the fault study and the coordination requirement.

Can this be fed from the board's comb busbar?

Often not. Comb and pin busbars are rated for a total current that is frequently below this level, and the terminal arrangement at the top of a range may not accept a comb at all. Treat it as a cable connection unless the board manufacturer confirms otherwise in writing, and check both the comb's rating and the device's terminal capacity for the conductor you intend to land.

Will a 63A four-pole discriminate with 32A devices downstream?

Not guaranteed. Under overload the larger device generally holds, but on a high fault current the magnetic elements of both can operate, and the closer the two ratings, the worse the outcome. Selectivity between specific device pairs is established by testing, and the manufacturer publishes tables for it. Ask for the table covering your exact upstream and downstream combination.

What should we send with an enquiry for this item?

The pole configuration and current are already fixed, so the useful details are the rest: required rated voltage for your system, the prospective fault current at the installation point so breaking capacity can be matched, the trip curve suited to the downstream load, whether the neutral pole must be protected or only switched, the incoming conductor size and lug type, and the board make and free way count.
