Choosing and specifying this item

Feeder duty, not a final circuit

At 32A a two-pole device is usually doing feeder work: supplying a small sub-board, a kitchen distribution point, or one large single-phase load. That changes the questions worth asking, because there is now protection both above it and below it, and the three have to behave as a set.

Selectivity and back-up protection

Two thermal-magnetic devices in series do not discriminate automatically. On a heavy fault both can see current above their magnetic threshold and both can open, dropping circuits that should have stayed live. Manufacturers publish selectivity tables for specific upstream and downstream pairings, and cascading tables that permit a downstream device to be applied where the pair has been verified together. Ask for the tables covering the actual devices in your board rather than a general assurance that they coordinate.

Confirm before ordering

Breaking capacity at the point of installation, rated voltage for the intended pole arrangement, trip curve and frequency. Settle separately whether the application also needs an isolating or main-switch function, and confirm the terminal capacity for the incoming conductor size — feeder terminations at this rating are a recurring source of heating in busy boards.

Frequently asked questions

Will a 32A two-pole discriminate with the 16A ways below it?

Not reliably, and not by ratio alone. Under overload the higher-rated device usually holds while the smaller one clears, but on a solid short circuit both may exceed their magnetic thresholds and open together. Whether they discriminate depends on the specific pair, which is why manufacturers publish selectivity tables. Ask for the table covering your actual upstream and downstream devices before relying on coordination.

Can this be used as the incomer for a small sub-board?

Often it is, but confirm three things first. Whether the specification requires a main switch or isolator function at the sub-board rather than protection alone; whether the device's terminals accept the incoming conductor size and lug type; and whether the fault level at that point is within its breaking capacity. Also check the sub-board's own busbar rating against the feeder rating.

What is cascading, and how does it help us?

Cascading, or back-up protection, is where an upstream device limits fault energy enough that a downstream device may be applied at a location where the prospective fault current exceeds its own standalone breaking capacity. It is only valid for combinations the manufacturer has tested and published. It is never something to assume from ratings, and the table must cover the exact device pair you intend to install.
