Choosing and specifying this item

Three poles, one trip

The real value of a three-pole device is the common trip bar: a fault on any one phase opens all three. That is what stops a three-phase motor being left running on two phases — the condition that quietly cooks windings. Confirm the poles are mechanically linked as one device rather than assembled from single modules joined by an accessory link, because a linked handle and a common trip mechanism are not the same thing.

Voltage is the first question

Three-phase distribution across the GCC is nominally 380–415V between lines, and a three-pole device is applied line-to-line. Confirm the rated operational voltage for that duty, along with frequency suitability for the 60 Hz Saudi supply.

A motor circuit needs more than this

A 16A three-pole way commonly feeds a small motor, a fan or a machine tool. The breaker protects the cable; the motor still needs its own overload protection, whether from a starter with a thermal relay, an electronic overload, or protection inside the equipment. Give the starting current and starting method with the enquiry so the trip curve can be chosen. Note also that there is no neutral pole here — if the load needs a switched neutral, the four-pole version is the correct selection.

Frequently asked questions

If one phase faults, do all three poles open?

On a properly constructed three-pole device, yes — the poles share a common trip mechanism, so a trip on one opens all three simultaneously. That behaviour is what protects three-phase motors from single-phasing. What you should confirm is that the device is a factory three-pole unit rather than three single-pole modules joined by a handle link, since a link that only ties the handles does not guarantee simultaneous tripping.

Is a three-pole MCB enough protection for a three-phase motor?

No. It protects the supply cable against overload and short circuit, but it cannot match a motor's thermal characteristic or detect phase imbalance and stalled rotors. Motor circuits need a starter with a thermal overload relay, an electronic motor protection relay, or thermistors in the windings. Specify the breaker for the cable and the starting current, and provide motor protection separately.

How do we decide between a three-pole and a four-pole device?

By whether the neutral has to be switched. A three-phase load with no neutral connection — most motors and many machines — is served by three poles. A four-wire circuit that carries neutral current, or one where the supply can be reversed or comes from a changeover arrangement, needs the neutral broken too. The system earthing and the project specification decide it.
