Choosing and specifying this item
Why the second pole exists
Two poles are a design decision, not a convenience. The arrangement is called for where the neutral cannot be treated as reliably at earth potential, where a supply may be reversed or reach the circuit from more than one source, in wet and external positions, and wherever the specification or the local authority requires both conductors broken for isolation. Test that requirement against the single-pole equivalent before deciding — paying for a second pole you do not need consumes board space you will want later.
Rated voltage matters more here
A two-pole device may be intended for line and neutral, or it may be rated for use across two lines. Those are different duties at different voltages. If the circuit is phase-to-phase in a three-phase board, confirm the rated operational voltage across the poles in writing. This is the attribute most often assumed and least often checked on two-pole selections.
Practical checks
Two poles occupy two module widths, so count free ways before ordering and confirm the comb busbar arrangement accepts a two-pole device. Then settle breaking capacity against the fault level at that board, the trip curve for what the circuit switches, and frequency suitability for a 60 Hz supply.
