Choosing and specifying this item

The fourth pole is a specification, not a detail

Four-pole devices are not all built the same. The neutral pole may be a plain switched pole that simply opens with the others, or a fully protected pole carrying its own thermal and magnetic elements. Which you need is a design decision, and it must be stated explicitly on the enquiry, because catalogue naming for the two variants is easily confused and the wrong one is rarely noticed until commissioning.

When the neutral has to be broken

Isolating the neutral matters where the supply can be reversed or arrives from more than one source — generator changeover, dual incomers, UPS-backed sub-boards — and where the earthing arrangement does not let you assume the neutral sits near earth potential. It matters again wherever a circuit must be proved dead before work starts.

Harmonics argue for a protected neutral

LED drivers, variable-speed drives and IT loads push triplen harmonic currents that add in the neutral instead of cancelling, so neutral current can approach or exceed phase current in a heavily non-linear installation. An unprotected neutral pole leaves that conductor unmonitored. Confirm rated voltage, breaking capacity, trip curve and frequency as well, and check four adjacent module widths are actually free in the board.

Frequently asked questions

Do we need four poles for a three-phase four-wire circuit?

Not automatically. Three poles are adequate where the neutral does not need to be switched and the earthing arrangement makes that safe. Four poles are called for where the neutral must be isolated: reversible or multiple supplies, changeover arrangements, certain earthing systems, and any circuit the specification requires to be fully isolated for maintenance. Confirm the requirement from the design documents rather than the load type alone.

Is the fourth pole protected or only switched?

Both types exist and you must ask which is offered. A switched neutral pole opens with the other three but carries no trip elements, so neutral overcurrent is not detected. A protected neutral pole has its own thermal and magnetic protection. Where harmonic-rich loads can drive high neutral currents, the protected version is the safer selection. State which you require in the enquiry.

Is a four-pole device required on generator changeover circuits?

Usually, because when two sources can feed the same circuit the neutral has to be isolated with the phases to prevent circulating current and to keep the earthing arrangement of each source intact. The exact requirement depends on the earthing system, the changeover scheme and the local authority's rules, so confirm it from the project's electrical design before ordering.
