Choosing and specifying this item

Continuous or near-continuous running changes the priorities. A machine that operates for weeks between stops is selected on materials, seal life and thermal margin as much as on its duty point.

Know the water, not just the flow

"Water" on an industrial site can mean cooling tower make-up, blowdown, RO reject or process return, each with its own chloride content, temperature and solids loading. Chlorides drive material selection, and coastal or brine-adjacent installations in this region are unforgiving of the wrong stainless grade. Confirm the analysis and the fluid temperature, then ask whether casing, impeller, shaft and seal faces suit it, and whether a mechanical seal or a packed gland is offered.

Thermal and electrical margin

Motor ratings assume an ambient temperature, and plant rooms and outdoor skids here routinely exceed it. Confirm the ambient the Power rating is based on, the insulation class, any derating that applies, and Voltage, phase and starting method.

Availability

Ask for the NPSH required at the duty point, the Flow Rate and Head the process needs at both its lowest and highest demand, the Connection Size with flange detail, and which wear parts are treated as consumables.

Frequently asked questions

What do you need to know about the water before selecting?

Its source, its temperature and its chemistry. Chloride content, total dissolved solids, pH and suspended solids all influence which casing, impeller, shaft and seal materials are appropriate, and a cooling tower blowdown or RO reject stream is far more aggressive than make-up water. Send whatever analysis the site holds. Without it, material selection becomes guesswork, and the cost of that appears as premature corrosion or seal failure.

Will it cope with plant room temperatures in summer?

That depends on the ambient the motor is rated for, which must be confirmed rather than assumed. Air-cooled motors lose capability as the surrounding air gets hotter, so a machine rated at a moderate ambient may need derating, a larger frame or forced ventilation in an unconditioned plant room or on an outdoor skid here. Tell us the installed location and expected ambient with the enquiry.

Mechanical seal or packed gland - which should I specify?

A mechanical seal runs effectively leak-free and suits clean duty and unattended running, but it fails suddenly if it is run dry or if abrasives reach the faces. A packed gland tolerates rougher water and fails gradually, but it must weep to stay cool and needs periodic adjustment. Match the choice to your maintenance regime and the fluid, then confirm which arrangement is offered.

How do I avoid cavitation on a hot process circuit?

Compare the NPSH available in your system with the NPSH required by the pump at the duty point, and keep a margin between them. Hotter liquid raises vapour pressure and cuts the available figure, so a suction arrangement that works cold may cavitate hot. Raise the source level, shorten and enlarge the suction line, remove unnecessary fittings, and confirm the required figure with us for the intended duty.
