Choosing and specifying this item

Here the controls deserve as much attention as the hydraulics. A filling duty is intermittent, automatic and usually unattended, so the failure modes are about level sensing rather than performance.

Level control

Specify a low-level cut-out in the source tank and a high-level stop in the destination tank, and give the start and stop levels a genuine gap. Too small a differential produces short cycling, which wears contactors and bearings faster than continuous running ever does. Ask how many starts per hour the motor allows, then set the level differential to respect it.

Protect against the obvious

Dry running ruins a mechanical seal quickly. Confirm what protection is offered - float, electrode probe or current sensing - and whether it is built in or a separate device. A non-return valve on the discharge stops the destination tank draining back when the pump stops.

Numbers to settle

Tank volume and the fill window you need together give the Flow Rate to request. Head comes from the level difference between the two tanks plus the pipe route and its fittings. Then confirm Power, Voltage and Connection Size against the plant space and the existing riser.

Frequently asked questions

How do I size a pump to fill a roof tank?

Two numbers give you the flow: the usable volume of the tank and the time window you are willing to give it. Refilling overnight and refilling within the hour are very different duties. Head comes from the vertical distance between the low level in the source tank and the tank inlet on the roof, plus friction in the riser and its fittings. Give us both and the selection follows.

How do I stop it running dry when the ground tank empties?

Interlock the pump to a level device in the source tank so it cannot start, or continue, once the water falls below the suction. A float switch, electrode probes or a current-sensing relay will all do it; which suits depends on the tank and the panel. Confirm whether protection is integral to the pump or a separate item, because assuming it is included is a common and expensive mistake.

The pump starts and stops every few seconds - what is wrong?

The gap between the start and stop levels is too small, or the float is being disturbed by the inflow. Widen the differential so the pump does a useful amount of work per start, and reposition or shroud the float away from turbulence. Check the non-return valve too: if it passes, the destination tank drains back and the level drops straight back to the start point.

Do I need a non-return valve on the discharge?

Yes, in almost every filling arrangement. Without one, water in the riser returns through the pump when it stops, which empties the line, spins the impeller backwards and can partly drain the tank you have just filled. Fit it close to the pump with an isolating valve, and select a type that closes before flow reverses so the stop does not generate water hammer.
