Choosing and specifying this item

Irrigation duty is set by the worst zone, not the average one. Size on the zone with the highest combined emitter demand and the longest lateral run, and add the pressure the emitters themselves need to operate correctly - drip, bubbler and rotor heads are not the same requirement.

Water quality first

Landscape schemes across the GCC frequently run on treated effluent or on well water carrying sand and suspended solids. Both are abrasive to impellers and hard on seals, and both dictate filtration upstream plus a strainer someone will realistically clean. Establish the source and its solids content before selection, then ask whether the wetted parts and seal faces suit it. Where fertigation is planned, elastomer compatibility with the injected chemicals has to be checked as well.

Exposure

An outdoor installation needs shading, a weather-rated enclosure, a verified IP rating for motor and controls, and UV-stable glands and cable.

To confirm

Flow Rate and Head at the design zone, Power and Voltage against the irrigation controller and the supply available out in the landscape area, and the Connection Size to match the mainline without reducing it.

Frequently asked questions

How do I size a pump across several irrigation zones?

Zones normally run one at a time, so select on the most demanding one rather than the total. Add up the emitter flows in that zone, then work out the head: the lift to the highest point, friction through the mainline and lateral, losses through filters and valves, and the operating pressure the emitters need at the far end. The worst zone becomes the duty point.

Can it be used with treated sewage effluent?

TSE is common for landscape irrigation in the region, but it has to be declared before selection. It carries solids and its chemistry is harder on materials than potable water, so the wetted parts, seal faces and elastomers must be confirmed as suitable, and filtration ahead of the pump becomes essential rather than optional. Tell us the source and provide an analysis if the project has one.

What protection does it need installed outdoors?

Shade first, since direct sun raises motor and panel temperatures well beyond what the equipment sees in a plant room. Then a weather-rated enclosure for the starter and controls, a confirmed IP rating for motor and panel, UV-resistant cable and glands, and a drained plinth so the base does not stand in irrigation water. Confirm the ingress rating rather than assuming an outdoor unit is sealed.

Can fertiliser be injected through the pump?

Injection is normally done downstream of the pump, into the mainline, so that concentrated chemical does not pass through the impeller and seal. If the design does route it through, the elastomers, seal faces and casing material must be confirmed as compatible with the specific chemicals. Also fit a non-return arrangement so nothing can siphon back toward the water source.
