Choosing and specifying this item

Floor area is usually why this arrangement is chosen, and headroom is what it costs.

Measure upwards

The saving in footprint is only real if there is vertical clearance above the unit to lift out the motor and rotating parts. Measure from the plinth to the underside of the slab with ducts, pipe runs and cable trays included, then check what lifting provision the plant room has. Retrofits into an existing room are where this goes wrong.

Pipework must carry its own weight

Where the pump sits in line with the pipe, both sides need independent support so that pipe weight and thermal movement are not taken by the casing. Flexible connectors, isolating valves and a bypass around the set turn future removal into a maintenance task rather than a system shutdown.

Confirm before quoting

Flow Rate and Head as a pair, and the Connection Size with its flange or thread detail. Settle Power and Voltage early: higher-head vertical machines commonly land on a three-phase supply at 380-415 V rather than single phase, and that changes the starter, the cable and the isolator the electrical contractor has to allow for.

Frequently asked questions

Why choose a vertical arrangement over a horizontal one?

Mainly floor area. A vertical set concentrates the machine into a small footprint, which matters in a crowded plant room or where several pumps share a header. The trade-off is height and access: servicing is done from above, so you need clear space overhead and a way of lifting the motor. If the room is short and wide, horizontal is often the easier answer.

How much clearance do I need above the pump?

Enough to lift the motor and the rotating assembly clear, which we can confirm for the unit offered. Measure the real obstruction height, not the slab: ducts, sprinkler pipes, lighting and cable trays all sit lower. Then decide how the weight will be lifted, since a plant room with no beam, hoist point or door wide enough turns a routine overhaul into a major exercise.

Can it be mounted straight into the pipeline without a base?

In-line mounting is common with this arrangement, but the pipe must be supported independently on both sides so the casing is not carrying pipe weight or thermal movement. Provide a solid support or plinth under the unit where the design calls for one, fit isolating valves either side, and use flexible connectors so vibration is not transmitted into the pipework.

Will it need three-phase power?

Often, but it must be confirmed for the specific unit rather than assumed. Higher-head vertical machines commonly sit on a three-phase supply at 380-415 V, while smaller ones may be single phase at 220-240 V. Ask for the voltage, phase and power before the electrical design is finalised, because the answer determines the starter type, cable size and isolator.
