Choosing and specifying this item

It adds pressure, it does not create supply

A booster is specified from two pressures and one flow: what is available at its inlet, what is required at the least favourable outlet — the highest and furthest point at peak simultaneous demand — and the flow that outlet group draws. The difference, plus pipe friction at that flow, is what the pump must add. State the inlet condition honestly; a booster fed from a starved or intermittent line will run dry rather than boost.

Behaviour on a solar supply

Available power varies through the day, so decide in advance how the system should behave in early morning and when cloud passes. A pressure vessel absorbs short draw-offs and reduces start-stop cycling; battery buffering or a constant-pressure controller is what actually holds delivery steady. Ask what the offered controller does at low irradiance and whether it can maintain a set pressure at all.

Confirm before quotation

Flow Rate, Head expressed as added pressure, Power, Voltage and the acceptable Solar Input window, plus low-pressure cut-out provision and connection sizes. Where the outlet serves potable distribution, say so — the wetted materials and any approval the project requires must then be verified for the specific unit offered.

Frequently asked questions

Can a booster draw water from a tank sitting below it?

Only if it is built for suction lift, and even then within a limited height with a foot valve and strainer fitted. Many boosters are designed for a flooded inlet and will not prime themselves from below. The reliable arrangement is to site the unit below the tank's lowest water level so the inlet is always flooded. Confirm the intended inlet condition before selection.

Will pressure drop when a cloud passes?

On a directly coupled array, yes — available power falls, the pump slows and delivered pressure follows. Whether that matters depends on the outlets: an irrigation line tolerates it, a shower or a filtration skid does not. If steady pressure is required, specify battery buffering or a controller that regulates to a set pressure, and add a pressure vessel to cover brief demands.

Do I need a pressure vessel?

For most distribution duties it is worth having. The vessel holds a small volume under pressure so short draw-offs are met without starting the pump, which cuts cycling, reduces wear and smooths the pressure the user feels. Size it against the expected pattern of small demands rather than the peak flow, and set its pre-charge in relation to the cut-in pressure.

What protects it if the supply runs dry?

A low-pressure or low-flow cut-out on the inlet side, or a level switch in the feeding tank, both wired so the controller stops the pump and retries after a delay rather than restarting immediately. This is more important on a solar installation than a mains one, because nobody is present through the pumping day to notice a pump running against no water.
