Choosing and specifying this item

Rate follows the volume and the solar window

A transfer duty is a batch job: the volume to be moved, divided by the usable pumping hours, gives the rate to specify. Sizing on an average day leaves the site short in winter, when the solar window shortens and array output falls. Size on the demanding case and let the controller idle on good days.

Suction arrangement and route

Establish whether the pump sits below the source with a flooded suction or above it and has to lift — the second needs priming, a foot valve and a strainer, and limits the practical distance. Then confirm the route: hose or pipe length and bore, fittings, the static difference between the two points, and the height of the discharge above the receiving tank's water surface. Long small-bore hose is where most transfer installations lose their flow.

Confirm before quotation

Flow Rate, Head, Power, Voltage and the acceptable Solar Input, plus connection sizes and whether the set is a fixed installation or moved between points. Fit a non-return valve where the two levels differ, or the line siphons back once the pump stops, and interlock levels at both ends for unattended daytime running.

Frequently asked questions

How do I choose the transfer rate?

Divide the volume you need moved in a day by the hours the array can realistically drive the pump, remembering that the usable window is shorter than daylight and shorter again in winter. Then sanity-check the figure against the pipe or hose you intend to use, since a high rate through a small bore simply becomes friction loss rather than delivered water.

Does it matter whether the pump sits above or below the source tank?

It matters a great deal. Below the lowest water level the inlet stays flooded, the pump primes itself and starting each morning is reliable. Above it, the unit has to lift on the suction side within a limited height and needs a foot valve, a strainer and a means of re-priming. On unattended solar duty the flooded arrangement is far more dependable.

Why does water flow backwards when the pump stops?

If the discharge point is higher than the source and the line stays full, the column siphons back through the stopped pump as soon as it loses power — which on a solar set happens every evening and every time cloud passes. A non-return valve on the discharge prevents it. Position the valve close to the pump and keep it accessible for inspection.

Can the same set be moved between locations?

It can if it is specified for it: a portable frame, quick-release couplings sized to the hose, protected cable and connectors that tolerate repeated handling, and a panel mounting that can be set up and taken down safely. Say at enquiry stage whether the duty is portable, because a fixed installation is normally piped, wired and mounted in a way that does not travel.
