Choosing and specifying this item

Circulation is a resistance problem

A circulator does not lift water; it overcomes the friction of a loop. The duty therefore comes from the pipe run — length, bore, fittings, and the pressure drop across a collector or heat exchanger — at the flow the process requires. Confirm Flow Rate and Head against that calculated loop resistance. A circulator asked for far more head than the loop presents simply runs off its curve and wastes array power.

Fluid and temperature first

State what is circulated and how hot it becomes. A solar thermal loop can reach temperatures well above domestic hot water service, and a glycol mixture changes viscosity, flow and the sealing arrangement. Ask for the maximum fluid temperature and the wetted materials, and confirm the seal or wet-rotor arrangement suits continuous running at that condition.

Control and installation

Decide whether the pump should run whenever there is sun or only on a differential signal, because circulating a collector loop at the wrong moment moves heat in the wrong direction. Confirm Power, Voltage and the Solar Input window, the required shaft orientation, and that the loop has proper air venting — trapped air stops a circulator faster than any electrical fault.

Frequently asked questions

How do I work out the head for a circulation loop?

Calculate the pressure drop around the full circuit at the design flow: straight pipe friction for the run length and bore, an allowance for bends, valves and fittings, and the manufacturer's stated drop across the collector, heat exchanger or coil. Static height does not count in a closed loop, since what rises on one side falls on the other. The result is the head to specify.

Can it handle a glycol mixture?

That depends on the pump, so confirm it rather than assume. Glycol is more viscous than water, which reduces the flow a given pump delivers and increases the loop pressure drop, and it is chemically harder on some seals and elastomers. State the glycol type and concentration and the temperature range with the enquiry so materials and duty are checked against the actual fluid.

Should it run whenever the sun is out?

Not necessarily. On a thermal collector loop, circulating when the collector is cooler than the store transfers heat backwards and loses what has been gained. The correct control is a differential signal between collector and store, not simple irradiance. On a purely mechanical circulation duty — mixing, filtering, aeration — running through the solar window may be exactly what is wanted.

Why does a circulator become noisy or stop after filling?

Almost always trapped air. A circulator has very little suction ability and an air pocket at a high point or in the rotor cavity will break circulation, cause noise and leave a wet-rotor bearing without the fluid that lubricates and cools it. Fit automatic air vents at high points, fill and vent methodically, and repeat the venting after the first days of operation.
