Choosing and specifying this item

Let the well test set the duty

A borehole pump is chosen from the borehole's own data before anything else. Obtain the driller's record: static water level, the pumping level at a stated abstraction rate, recovery time, and the depth and length of the screen. Pumping harder than the aquifer recovers draws the level down onto the pump, and on a solar set running unattended all day that ends as a burnt motor rather than a noticed fault.

Fit and setting position

Take Borehole Diameter as the measured cased internal bore, then allow for the cable running alongside and for any deviation from vertical. The unit is normally set above the screen so incoming water passes the motor, and well clear of sediment at the base.

Confirm before quotation

Flow Rate and Head at the duty point, where head accounts for drawdown, the rise to surface, delivery friction and any pressure needed at the outlet. Confirm Power and Voltage, and what is included: controller, riser, cable, splice kit and safety rope. Declare sand and salinity from the water analysis, and verify with the local authority which abstraction permits and metering conditions apply to the well.

Frequently asked questions

What information should the drilling contractor give me?

Ask for the completion log: total drilled depth, cased internal diameter, screen depth and length, static water level, the pumping level measured at a stated test rate, and the recovery after the test stopped. A sand content figure after development and a water analysis complete the picture. Those figures determine the achievable flow, the setting depth and the materials, and without them any selection is guesswork.

How do I stop the pump over-pumping the well?

Set the duty flow at or below the rate the well test showed it can sustain, then back it up with protection: a level probe set above the pump that cuts out on low water and restarts after a delay, or a controller with dry-run detection. On solar duty this matters more than on mains, because the pump will otherwise run every daylight hour with nobody watching the level.

How does this differ from a general submersible pump?

The terms overlap in the market and the same machine may be described either way, so do not select on the label. What actually decides the offer is the measured cased bore, the intended setting depth, the well's tested yield and drawdown, and the duty flow and head. Provide those and the correct unit follows, whatever the item is called in the enquiry.

Does groundwater salinity matter for selection?

Yes, particularly in coastal and eastern areas where chloride levels in groundwater can be high. Salinity drives the choice of wetted materials in stages, shaft and motor housing, and it also affects what the delivered water can be used for downstream. Send a water analysis with the enquiry, and state whether the water feeds irrigation, livestock or a treatment plant.
