Choosing and specifying this item

Clearance eliminates most candidates first

Settle geometry before performance. Request Pump Diameter and compare it against the smallest measured internal bore of the casing or tank penetration — not the nominal figure on the drilling record. Scale, a slightly deviated casing and the cable strapped alongside the unit all consume clearance, and a set that will not pass the tightest point is no set at all.

Keep the motor submerged and cooled

A submersible motor sheds heat into the water moving past it, so the unit must stay below the lowest pumping level at maximum drawdown, with flow across the motor jacket. Record the static level and the level at full pumping, and specify level electrodes or a dry-run function. Loss of submergence is the most common failure on solar sets, because the pump keeps running as long as the sun does and nobody is standing there to stop it.

Confirm before quotation

Flow Rate and Head at the real duty point, Power and Voltage, whether controller and drop cable are in scope, and the cable cross-section calculated for volt drop over the full drop length. Declare sand content or brackish water — wear materials and stage construction depend on it.

Frequently asked questions

How deep can this type of pump be set?

Setting depth is limited by the head capability at your required flow, not by the pump physically fitting. Add the drawdown level, the rise to surface, delivery pipe friction and any outlet pressure to get the duty head, then check the pump against that. Separately, the riser and cable must carry the column and the volt drop over the full length, so confirm those with the setting depth stated.

What happens if the water level drops during the day?

Without protection the pump keeps running while the sun shines, loses submergence and overheats. Specify a low-level probe or float in the well, or a controller with dry-run detection and a timed restart, so the set stops when the level reaches the cut-out point and resumes once the aquifer or tank recovers. Position the sensor above the motor, not level with it.

Can it be used in a tank instead of a well?

Usually yes, provided the tank gives enough depth to keep the unit submerged and the intake is screened. In a wide tank the water does not have to flow past the motor as it does in a narrow casing, so a flow sleeve may be needed to maintain cooling. Confirm the pump diameter against the tank access opening and check the discharge connection against the existing pipework.

Does sandy or brackish water change the selection?

Significantly. Abrasive solids wear stages, wear rings and bearings, and the practical answer is a combination of correct setting depth above the sediment, a screened or sleeved intake and materials chosen for the duty. Salinity affects material choice too, particularly near the coast. Give a water analysis where one exists, and state the sand content the well produces after development.
