Choosing and specifying this item

Depth changes the mechanics, not only the head

Confirm Well Depth as two separate figures — the total drilled depth and the intended setting depth — because everything downstream follows from the second. A long column loads the riser and the thrust bearing with the weight of pipe plus the water inside it, so riser material and joint rating must be checked rather than assumed. Check valve arrangement matters too: a single valve at the head leaves a tall column to slam back on shutdown.

Cable and volt drop

Over a long drop, conductor size is chosen for volt drop rather than current alone. Undersized cable starves the motor and appears on site as poor delivery that looks like a pump fault. Confirm cable cross-section, insulation suitable for continuous immersion, and the splice method used at the motor.

Confirm before quotation

Flow Rate and Head at the duty point, Power and Voltage, and exactly what is included: riser, cable, splice kit, safety rope, wellhead and level protection. Plan the lifting method before installation — a deep set cannot be pulled by hand, and space for a rig or tripod has to exist at the wellhead and remain accessible.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate total head for a deep well?

Add the pumping water level — the static level plus drawdown at your intended abstraction rate, not the static level alone — to the height from the wellhead to the discharge point, then add friction loss in the riser and the delivery line at the design flow, and finally any pressure required at the outlet. Quote that total with the flow it applies at, since head without flow means nothing.

Why is cable size so critical on a deep setting?

Because volt drop grows with cable length. A conductor sized only for the motor current can still deliver too little voltage at the motor after a long drop, which shows as reduced output, higher current and heat. Size the cable for volt drop across the full length between controller and motor, and confirm the insulation is rated for permanent submersion in the water present.

How does this differ from a borehole pump?

In the market the descriptions overlap heavily and the same machine may be offered under either name, so do not select on the label. What separates one offer from another is the measured cased bore, the intended setting depth, the duty flow and head, and what is included in the drop assembly. Provide those and the right unit follows.

What should I plan for maintenance access?

Plan how the unit comes out before it goes in. Deep sets need a rig or tripod, clear headroom above the wellhead and a route for a vehicle to reach it, none of which is easy to arrange later on a remote solar site where the array and fencing are already installed. Leave the wellhead approach clear and record the setting depth, cable size and splice details for whoever pulls it.
