Choosing and specifying this item

The insulation question comes first

At an inch and a half the run is usually lagged — chilled water, hot water or condensate — so the bore of the support is decided against the insulation outside diameter, not the bare pipe. Clamping metal straight onto a cold line puts a thermal bridge at every support: it sweats, drips onto ceiling tiles and rusts whatever sits below. Either carry the clamp on a rigid insulation insert with a load-spreading shield, or order it sized over the lagging and make the vapour seal good at the break.

Fixing and substrate

Mounting type and hole centres matter more here than at the smaller sizes, because a single light anchor into blockwork is often no longer enough. Establish what the wall actually is — dense block, hollow block, a non-structural skin, or concrete — before the anchor is chosen. Finish and grade should be quoted against the room: an open plant room floor drain is a wetter duty than a sealed ceiling void.

Detailing

Apply the pipe material's own spacing table, and add a support beside every valve, strainer and flexible connector so the weight of the fitting is not carried by the joints on either side of it.

Frequently asked questions

How do I support a lagged chilled water line without condensation at every support?

Keep the metal outside the vapour barrier. The usual arrangement is a rigid insulation insert at each support position with a shield that spreads the clamping load, sized so the clamp closes on the insert rather than the pipe. The vapour barrier is then sealed continuously across the support. Clamping directly onto the pipe creates a cold bridge, and it will drip regardless of how good the surrounding lagging is.

Is a single anchor enough at this size?

It depends on the filled weight per support and on the substrate, not on the pipe diameter alone. Establish the wall build-up first: dense block, hollow block, non-structural skin or concrete all behave differently. Then check the anchor against edge distance and spacing as well as its own capacity. Where the wall is only a partition skin, take the load back to the structural frame instead.

Should the clamp bore match the pipe or the insulation?

That is a project decision and it needs stating with the enquiry. Sizing over the insulation gives a larger bore and needs an insert to prevent crushing; sizing to the pipe means the insulation is interrupted and made good around the support. Send the insulation type and thickness so the quotation matches the arrangement your specification requires.

Do I need extra supports around valves?

Yes. A valve, strainer or flexible connector concentrates weight at one point, and if it is unsupported the load goes into the pipe joints on either side. Provide a support close to each side of the item so it is carried independently of the run. The same applies where the pipe connects to equipment, where you also want the connection free of installation stress.
