Choosing and specifying this item

You are buying load capacity, not a diameter

Two inch is where filled weight starts to drive the detail. The support has to carry the pipe, its contents, the lagging and the hydrostatic test condition — and for a line that normally runs part full, or carries gas or air, the test is the heaviest state it will ever see. Size the fixing and check the structure for that case, not for the running weight.

Fixings and load path

  • Mounting type and hole pattern govern the anchor schedule. In structural concrete, edge distance and anchor-to-anchor spacing matter as much as the anchor's own capacity; in blockwork, expect to need a through-fixing, a resin anchor or a backing plate.
  • On a riser, transfer load into the floor slab at intervals rather than letting it accumulate on the lowest bracket. Decide in advance which supports are load-bearing and which merely guide.
  • Finish and grade to be confirmed against the exposure.

The failure that keeps repeating

Mixed metals. A stainless clamp bolted with plated carbon fasteners onto galvanised channel in a humid duct is a corrosion cell, and the fastener is the part that goes. Keep the fastener with the clamp, and isolate where mixing is unavoidable.

Frequently asked questions

What load should I design the fixing for?

The heaviest credible state, which is usually the hydrostatic test rather than normal operation — particularly on lines that run part full, or carry air or gas and are tested with water. Include the pipe, contents, insulation, valves and any equipment weight the run picks up locally. Then check that load against the anchor capacity and the structure it lands in, not just against the clamp.

How should a two-inch riser be supported?

Split the job. Load-bearing supports at defined floors transfer the weight into the slab, and the supports between them locate the pipe without carrying the accumulated column. If every bracket simply grips the pipe, the load walks down the riser to the lowest fixing. Decide the load-bearing positions on the drawing and mark them, so they are not treated as ordinary clamps on site.

Concrete or blockwork — does it change what I order?

It changes the fixing more than the clamp, but the two are ordered together. Concrete allows a mechanical or resin anchor subject to edge distance and spacing. Blockwork often needs a through-bolt, a resin anchor with a sleeve, or a spreader plate across several units. Confirm the mounting type and hole centres of the clamp so the plate or channel behind it can be sized before delivery to site.

Can I mount stainless clamps onto galvanised strut?

It is done, but it needs care in humid or coastal locations, where the contact between stainless and galvanised or plated steel drives corrosion of the less noble part. If the strut is already installed, use isolating washers or a liner at the contact and keep the fasteners stainless. Where the duct stays wet, matching the whole assembly in stainless avoids the problem entirely.
