Choosing and specifying this item

Load per rod, then how many rods

Two inch is where hanger count stops being a spacing rule and becomes a load calculation. Work out the filled weight carried by each hanger, including the test condition, and size the rod and the top fixing to that. The hanger, the rod, the nut and the anchor form one chain, and the weakest link is usually the connection into the slab rather than anything at the pipe.

Gradient and alignment

Drainage, condensate and vented lines need fall, and hangers are how you achieve it — but only if drop lengths are set deliberately. String a line, set the first and last hanger to the required levels, then adjust the rest to it. Cutting rods on site to whatever length looks about right is how a two-inch drain ends up flat in the middle and holding water.

Confirm

  • Finish and grade for the exposure: plant room, ceiling void above a kitchen, or external.
  • The rod thread accepted, and whether nuts and washers come with it.
  • On chilled water, a rigid insert and load-spreading shield at every hanger, sized over the lagging.

Where several services follow the same route, a trapeze is usually steadier than individual hangers and uses fewer top fixings.

Frequently asked questions

How do I decide the number of hangers and the rod diameter?

Start from the support spacing published for the pipe material, then convert it into a load per hanger using the filled weight plus insulation, valves and the hydrostatic test condition. Size the rod, the nut and the top fixing to that load, and check the anchor against the structure it enters. On lines that normally run part full, the test case usually governs, not the operating weight.

How do I keep the fall correct on a gravity line?

Set the levels rather than the rod lengths. Establish the required invert at the start and the end of the run, string a line between them, and adjust each hanger to it before the pipe is fixed. Leave enough adjustment in the rod and nut to correct afterwards. Cutting each rod to an eyeballed length produces a run that dips in the middle and retains water at that low point.

Individual hangers or a trapeze?

Individual hangers suit a single line on its own route. A trapeze is usually steadier, needs fewer top fixings and is the better choice where several services share a corridor or riser. The trade-off is that the trapeze must be designed for the total load of everything on it, including test conditions, and the channel section, rod size and both top fixings sized as a unit.

What finish and grade should I specify?

It follows the environment rather than the pipe. A ceiling void above a kitchen or wet area stays humid and greasy; a plant room may be washed down; an external route on a coastal site adds chloride and UV. Give us the location with the enquiry, along with whether the hangers will be visible, and the grade and finish can be quoted against that duty instead of assumed.
