Choosing and specifying this item

Three ways to support the same pipe

At one inch this range offers a clamp, a U-bolt and a hanger for the same nominal size, and they are not interchangeable. A clamp suits a line held against a wall, column or channel where the fixing face sits behind the pipe. A U-bolt needs a plate or bar to pass through and gives a hard, positive grip that suits vibration. A hanger is for pipe carried below a soffit on a drop rod. Choose by where the load has to go, then confirm that fixing face actually exists in the building.

Confirm at enquiry

  • Mounting type and hole centres, so the anchor, channel nut or bracket is scheduled with the clamp rather than improvised.
  • Finish and grade, particularly for a wet riser duct or an exposed coastal elevation.
  • Whether spacers are wanted. A pipe held hard against blockwork traps moisture behind it and cannot be painted, inspected or cleaned.

Take-off

Count supports off the layout rather than applying a flat rule. Every change of direction, every valve and every equipment connection wants support each side, and those extras are usually what the first estimate misses.

Frequently asked questions

When should I use a clamp rather than the U-bolt or the hanger at one inch?

Use the clamp where there is a solid face behind the pipe — a wall, a column or a channel — and the line simply needs to be held to it. Choose the U-bolt where you have a plate or bar to bolt through and want a firm grip against vibration. Choose the hanger where the pipe is carried below a slab on a drop rod. The building, not the pipe, usually makes the decision.

Can these be fixed into blockwork?

Only with a fixing suited to the substrate. Blockwork varies from solid dense units to hollow cells, and a plug and screw that works in concrete can pull straight out of a hollow block. Confirm the wall build-up, then select a resin anchor, a through-fixing or a spreader plate accordingly. Where the wall is a non-structural skin, take the load to the frame instead.

Should the pipe stand off the wall?

In most services, yes. A stand-off lets the pipe be painted, inspected and cleaned behind, keeps trapped moisture away from the pipe wall in humid plant areas, and gives room for lagging if insulation is added later. Say at enquiry whether you need a spacer or a stand-off pattern, since it also affects the fixing length and the loading on the anchor.

How do I estimate quantities?

Work from the routing drawing: apply the published support spacing for the pipe material to each straight run, then add supports either side of bends, valves, strainers, flexible connectors and equipment connections. Vertical runs need load transfer into the structure at intervals. Counting only the straight runs is the most common reason a support package comes up short on site.
