Choosing and specifying this item

Spacing decides this size, not load

At half an inch the weight carried is almost never the governing factor — support spacing and line straightness are. Small-bore runs sag between brackets that were set out by eye, and once a branch has picked up a wave it stays visible on exposed work. Take the interval from the support table for the pipe material and wall thickness actually being installed, then let the clamp quantity fall out of that.

Settle before you enquire

  • Mounting type. A base-fixed pattern with a single hole behaves very differently from a strut-mounted clamp or one built around a threaded stud, and it decides the anchor schedule and whether channel is in the scope at all.
  • Finish — mill, pickled and passivated, or polished. It shows on exposed work and matters in wash-down areas.
  • Grade, in writing. A coastal plant room in the Eastern Province is a far harsher chloride environment than an inland conditioned riser shaft.

On site

Thin-wall tube deforms easily: tighten to hold, not to crush. And keep carbon steel fasteners out of a stainless assembly — in a damp duct the bolt becomes the sacrificial part, and the bolt is what is holding the pipe up.

Frequently asked questions

How far apart should I set the supports on a half-inch run?

Take the interval from the support table for the pipe material, wall thickness and operating temperature rather than from a general rule of thumb. Small-bore lines sag quickly, and a hot run needs closer spacing than a cold one. Add a support beside every valve, meter and equipment connection so the fitting is not hung off the pipe joint, and confirm the final spacing on the approved shop drawing.

Can I fix these with ordinary carbon steel bolts or onto galvanised channel?

Not in a damp or coastal location. Stainless in contact with plated or galvanised steel in the presence of moisture forms a galvanic couple, and the less noble part corrodes first — usually the fastener, which is the component actually carrying the pipe. Use fasteners from the same stainless family, or isolate the two metals with an insulating washer or liner where mixing cannot be avoided.

Does it matter whether the pipe is insulated when I request a quotation?

Yes, because it changes the bore you need. A clamp sized to the bare pipe will crush lagging; a clamp sized over the insulation needs a rigid insert to carry the load without collapsing the material. Send the insulation type and thickness with the enquiry, and say whether the line is hot or chilled, so the correct arrangement can be offered against your requirement.

What grade and finish is this clamp?

The catalogue records the material as stainless steel and the size as 1/2 inch; the grade and the surface finish are confirmed at quotation stage. Tell us where the clamps will sit — conditioned interior, plant room, wash-down area or exposed coastal external — and the grade and finish can be quoted against that exposure rather than assumed.
