Choosing and specifying this item

The thread is the specification

A U-bolt is bought by its thread, not only by the pipe it goes around. The thread governs the nut and washer, the diameter drilled in the plate or channel, and the hole centres that have to line up with the fixing face. Confirm it before anything is drilled or ordered to match — a U-bolt that will not pass through a pre-drilled bracket is wasted once it is on site.

Stainless threads gall

Austenitic stainless nuts run on stainless threads can seize by galling, especially when driven fast with a power tool. Assemble slowly, use an anti-seize compound, and consider a nut of a different grade or a nylon-insert lock nut. A galled U-bolt cannot be adjusted or removed later without cutting it off, which on a live line is an expensive way to learn the lesson.

Grip is a decision

Clamped down hard, a U-bolt acts as an anchor and stops the pipe moving axially. If the line has to slide, back it off to a controlled grip with a liner, or use the clamp or hanger from the same range instead. Confirm the finish too, and match nuts and washers to the U-bolt so the assembly stays one material.

Frequently asked questions

What thread do these U-bolts have?

The thread is one of the details confirmed at quotation, and it is worth pinning down first because everything else follows from it: nut and washer size, the drill diameter in your plate or channel, and the hole centres. Tell us the fixing arrangement you intend — plate thickness, channel section, whether the holes are already drilled — so the U-bolt supplied fits what is waiting for it on site.

Why do stainless nuts seize on the thread?

It is galling: two austenitic stainless surfaces under pressure can cold-weld to each other, and running the nut down fast with a power tool generates the heat and pressure that trigger it. Assemble by hand or at low speed, apply an anti-seize compound, keep the threads clean, and consider a nut of a different grade or a nylon-insert type. Once galled, the only remedy is cutting.

Should I use a U-bolt or the standard clamp at one inch?

Choose the U-bolt where you have a plate, bar or channel to bolt through and want a firm grip that resists vibration and knocks. Choose the clamp where there is a flat face behind the pipe and the run needs holding rather than gripping, or where the line has to be free to move slightly. The building geometry usually settles it before the pipe does.

Does the U-bolt come with nuts, washers and a backing plate?

Confirm the scope of supply with the enquiry, along with the thread and finish. If nuts and washers are added separately, keep them in the same stainless family as the U-bolt — a stainless U-bolt with plated carbon nuts will fail at the nuts first in a humid plant room. Backing plates, saddles and liners should be listed explicitly if you need them.
