Choosing and specifying this item

Get the load path agreed before anything is ordered

Four inch full of water is a serious load, and at this size the question stops being which support and becomes what it is fixed to. Trace the load from the pipe through the clamp, the fastener, the bracket or channel and into the slab or steel, and have that path reviewed by whoever is responsible for the structure. A support that is perfectly adequate in isolation is still wrong if it is anchored into a non-structural blockwork skin or a permanent formwork soffit.

Specify alongside the clamp

  • Mounting type and hole centres, so the plate, bracket or channel is ordered to match instead of being drilled on site by eye.
  • Whether supports are shared on a trapeze with other services, since that changes the load at each fixing and the spacing you can justify.
  • Finish and grade for the exposure. Four inch is often the line exposed on a roof, in a car park or in a wash-down area.

Installation sequence

Set and level the supports as a set before the pipe goes up. Pulling a four-inch spool into a bracket that is out of line puts the misalignment straight into the joints, and it stays there.

Frequently asked questions

Does a four-inch support need structural review?

The fixing into the structure does. The clamp itself is one link in a chain that ends in a slab, a beam or a wall, and that end is where the load has to be accepted. Give the structural engineer the filled and test weights, the support spacing and the proposed anchor, and get the substrate confirmed as suitable. This is particularly important where the route crosses non-structural partitions or a metal deck soffit.

Can several services share one trapeze with this line?

Often yes, and it is usually a steadier arrangement than individual fixings. But the trapeze then carries the sum of all the services plus their test conditions, so it has to be designed as a unit — channel section, rod size and both top fixings. Also check the clamp mounting type and hole centres suit the channel, and keep any electrical containment separated from the wet services on the same frame.

How do I avoid stressing the joints during installation?

Set the supports out and level them before the pipe is lifted, rather than fitting brackets to a pipe already in place. A large spool pulled sideways or upwards into a misaligned support carries that force permanently into its joints and into any equipment connection at the end of the run. Support the spool during jointing so the weld or joint is not made under load.

What should I confirm before ordering?

Mounting type and hole centres, so the supporting steelwork or channel is compatible; the finish; and the grade against the exposure, which at this size is often external. Also state whether the line is insulated and whether the supports are to be load-bearing, guides or hold-downs, because those three are detailed differently even where the clamp looks the same.
