Choosing and specifying this item

A bigger radius means harder contact

On two-inch pipe a plain U-bolt touches over a narrow band, and that concentrates the clamping force. On thin-wall tube, on lagged lines, and anywhere the pipe vibrates, put a saddle, liner or shield between bolt and pipe so the grip is spread rather than dishing the wall at two points.

The pump-room case

U-bolts get chosen at this size for pump, compressor and generator connections precisely because they hold hard. Anything holding hard on a vibrating line needs a positive locking arrangement — double nuts, a nylon-insert nut, or a locking washer — and a tightening method agreed with the installer, so the assembly is not simply nipped up further by feel at every maintenance visit.

Confirm before ordering

  • Thread size, and with it the leg length and hole centres, so the plate or channel is drilled once and correctly.
  • Finish, and the grade of the nuts as well as the bolt. A stainless U-bolt with plated carbon nuts fails at the nuts first in a damp plant room.

If the line also has to be restrained sideways, say so. A U-bolt resists far better in the plane of its legs than out of it.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a saddle or liner at two inch?

It is worth specifying wherever the pipe wall is thin, the line is insulated, or there is vibration. A plain U-bolt bears on a narrow contact band, so the clamping force is concentrated at two points; a saddle or liner spreads it around a larger arc. A liner also separates the two metals and damps noise transferred into the supporting steel, which matters in occupied areas below plant.

Will a U-bolt hold on a vibrating pump connection?

It will hold, but not by friction alone over time. Vibration works nuts loose, so use a positive locking method — double nuts, nylon-insert nuts or locking washers — and set a consistent tightening method rather than leaving it to feel. Add the connection to the maintenance checklist. Also consider whether the pipework needs a flexible connector at the equipment so the vibration is not fed into the run at all.

What is actually different from the one-inch U-bolt besides the pipe size?

The leg length and hole centres change, so the plate or channel behind it is drilled differently; the contact band is wider but the load per support is higher, which is why a saddle or liner matters more; and the load reaching the fixing is greater, so the plate thickness and anchor need checking. Confirm the thread size for both, since they are not necessarily the same.

Which nuts should I use with it?

Nuts from the same stainless family as the U-bolt, so the assembly is one material and there is no galvanic couple at the most heavily loaded point. Guard against galling by assembling at low speed with an anti-seize compound, and consider a nylon-insert or different-grade nut, which reduces seizing while providing the locking a vibrating line needs. Confirm whether nuts and washers are included at enquiry.
