Choosing and specifying this item

Hot lines move, so the support has a job to choose

Three-quarter inch is the workhorse size for domestic hot water risers and branch drops, and that is exactly where a clamp stops being a passive bracket. A heated line grows along its length, so every support has to be deliberately either a guide that lets the pipe slide or an anchor that holds it still. Clamp everything tight on a hot run and the movement has nowhere to go: ticking behind ceilings, fixings working loose, and eventually a distorted branch at the outlet.

Worth asking for

  • Mounting type — wall base plate, ceiling, strut or stud — with hole centres, because that fixes the anchor schedule.
  • Finish, and whether a rubber or EPDM lining is available. A lined clamp cuts structure-borne noise and keeps a dissimilar metal off the pipe wall.
  • Grade, stated against the location: a wet duct and a conditioned shaft are different corrosion duties.

The detail people miss

The bore has to match what is actually being gripped. If the line is lagged, either clamp over a rigid insulation insert with a load-spreading shield, or order sized over the lagging with the vapour seal made good — otherwise the insulation crushes and condensation starts at every support.

Frequently asked questions

Should every clamp on a hot water riser be tightened fully?

No. Decide first which supports are anchors and which are guides. Anchors are tightened to hold the pipe and are placed where you want the expansion to be pushed away from; guides are set to locate the line while letting it slide axially. Tightening every support hard traps the growth in the pipe, which is what produces ticking noises, loosened fixings and stressed branch connections.

Can I get these with a rubber or EPDM lining?

Lining is one of the details to confirm at enquiry, along with mounting type and finish. Where it is available it does two useful things: it damps noise passing from the pipe into the wall or ceiling, and it separates the clamp from the pipe surface, which is helpful where the pipe and the support are not the same material or where slight movement is expected at the support.

We use three-quarter inch for both cold and hot branches. Can the same clamp serve both?

Physically the size suits both, but the detailing differs. A cold or chilled branch needs the metal kept outside the vapour barrier with an insert and shield, otherwise every support sweats. A hot branch needs a guide-and-anchor arrangement so it can expand. Say which service each batch is for when you enquire, so the right lining and bore are quoted.

What decides how many I need per drop?

The pipe material's published support spacing, plus a support next to each change of direction, each valve and each connection into equipment or a fixture. On a vertical drop, spacing is usually more generous than on the horizontal, but the load still has to be transferred into the structure at intervals rather than accumulating at the lowest bracket.
